The Inimitable Beauty of the Noble Qur’an (“Verily, from rhetoric all charming beauty spurt!”)
The Noble Qur’an has an unsurpassed divine spell and inimitable beauty in its own, a divine spell that fascinated Arabs and dazzled the whole world.
Allah, Exalted be He, favored His Prophet (SAWS) with the Noble Qur’an that is the most eloquent of all books. He ordained it to be replete with all sublimity, studded with gems of rhetoric and pearls of linguistic features. So he challenged the people who owned all eloquence and literary arts to produce or bring forth a Sūrah, rather an ayah of the like. Hence the polytheists and disbelievers were led astray and lost. They were dazzled and fascinated by the sublimity and eloquence of the diction, the perfect clarity, conciseness, argumentation and demonstration of the Noble Qur’an.
Al- Walid Ibnul-Mughira said on hearing verses of the Qura’n: “By God! Verily, the Qur’an has sweetness and beauty and in it lurks grace! At its highest it is fresh and leafy and at its lowest it is copious and abundant!”
Al-Walid was in the right. On hearing Allah’s verses, he encountered Allah’s firmest Rope, the manifest light, the wise Remembrance, the Straight Path from which no desires were deviated, no tongues might be confused, and no opinions were diversified therewith. Scholars never feel that they had enough of the Noble Qur’an and its recitation, and the pious never feel fed up therewith. The wonders of the Noble Qur’an are endless despite the fact that it is frequently and repeatedly recited. The repeated recitation thereof augments its sweetness. The more we recite and read it, the more we like it. All praises and thanks belong to Allah! People feel tired of reading books for twice or twice. Yet, the Noble Qur’an is still replete with all lavish grace and ever-fruitful magnificence. All words and books, no matter how eloquent they are, other than the Noble Qur’an are tiresome to read repeatedly.
There is a graceful remark by Sayyd Qutb, the author of “In the Shade of the Qur’an (Fi Zilal al-Qur’an), the well-known 20th Century tafsir of the Qur’an. He said: “Ever since the first instance of its revelation, the Noble Qur’an dazzled and fascinated the Arabs. By the Arabs I mean those who embraced Islam and had their hearts expounded for Islam in addition to those whom Allah ordained to have envelopment on their beholdings.
A small group of people (as Khadiga, Ali Ibn Abi Talib, Abu-Bakr and Zayyd Ibn Al-Haritha) embraced Islam because of Muhammad’s great character and not by virtue of the Noble Qur’an. They embraced Islam because they were familiar with Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) who was truthful and honest, and had a magnificent character and high morals. Apart from that group, the Noble Qur’an was an essential cause and crucial factor that made Arabs embrace Islam. In fact, he (SAWS) had no might whatsoever, and Islam was not powerful then. On contemplating how Omar Ibnul-Khattab embraced Islam, we will find wondrous facts. Islam was void of all might and Muslims were persecuted when Omar embraced Islam. Al-Walid Ibnul-Mughira was dazzled by the Noble Quran and its ayat when Islam was really frail and Quraysh persecuted Muslims.
We will mention in the coming episodes some stories about the Arabs and how they were dazzled by the Noble Qur’an. We will mention how the most eloquent Arabs were dumb-founded and stunted when the verses were sent down. The story of Omar Ibnul-Khattab’s embracing Islam proves the vanquishing magnificence and beauty of the Noble Qur’an. How did the Noble Qur’an overwhelm and dazzle the Arabs’ hearts and mentalities to the extent that the believers and disbelievers acknowledged it? How come the believers and disbelievers were dazzled by the Noble Qur’an?
We will deal with all these issues in the coming issues insha’ Allah!
